Background Information on Health Psychology

Health Psychology is the study of how our mental, emotional, and social well-being affect our physical health and quality of life.

This area of psychology is gaining recognition as a new branch in the larger field of psychology.

In the late 1800s, psychologists began to explore how the human mind can influence human behavior. They came up with a new field called “psychology.” The psychiatry doctors who practiced at that time were mainly interested in diseases of the body. These doctors were not trained in psychology. So they turned to psychologists to help them with their patients’ mental problems.

People in this field are known as” health psychologists.” Today, people who work as health psychologists are a force for good. These professionals have a strong background in psychology and medicine. They can use these two disciplines to make life better for their patients. They might study how different factors like stress, anxiety or depression affect people. They might also recommend different treatments such as psychotherapy, medication or behavioral therapy as appropriate for each situation.
